李唐: 江山小景圖

李唐（1049－1130），河陽人。字晞古。善畫山水人物，筆意不凡，其山水初學李思訓後加以變化，愈覺清新。喜作長圖大幛，石用大斧劈皴。畫水有盤渦動蕩之勢。人物絕類李公麟。畫牛亦得戴嵩遺法，為南宋四大家之首。

人を畏服させるような北中国の景観と異なって、江南では延々と流れる河川と平坦な丘陵が織り成す、平らで穏やかな風景が見渡す限り続いている。代表作とされる「万壑松風図」とは一転し、手に取って鑑賞できる巻物を採用したのは、これこそが江南の景色を描くのに相応しい形だと考えたからだろう。

Li T'ang : Intimate Scene of Rivers and Mountains

Li T'ang (ca. 1049- ca. 1130) excelled at painting landscapes and figures. His painting of rocks and boulders is characterized by the use of the so-called "ax-cut" texture stroke. His water is often depicted with swirling, roiling forces. He is considered the leader of the Four Great Masters of the Southern Sung. In this piece, the contours and modeling of rocks and mountains largely are described with a fine and tight rendition of the "ax-cut" texture stroke. This corresponds with his large hanging scroll landscape, " Whispering Pines in the Gorges."
